When it comes to buying a dining table, one of the most important factors to consider is what size do you go for. The size of your dining table will not only determine how many bums on seats you can get round but it will also affect the overall look and feel of the room. In this blog post, we'll explore the dining table sizes and provide some guidance on what size dining table you should buy based on the number of people you want to seat and entertain.

Standard Dining Table Sizes

We’ve been making dining tables for years and we’ve found that as standard, before adding any fancy extensions, dining tables come in three main shapes: rectangular, round, and square. Here are the standard sizes for each shape:

  • Rectangular dining tables: 180cm long x 91cm wide (seats 6), 240 long x 100cm wide (seats 8), and 300cm x 120cm cm long (seats 10-12).
  • Round dining tables: 90cm  in diameter (seats 4), 120cm in diameter (seats 5-6)
  • Square dining tables: 91cm  square (seats 4), 120cm square (seats 8), and 150cm square (seats 8-10).

Of course, these are just the standard sizes, and you can find dining tables in a wide variety of sizes, or have them made to measure by us to fit your space perfectly.

Table Sizes for Different Seating Capacities

Now that we know the standard sizes, let's take a closer look at specific table sizes for different seating capacities.

4 Seater Dining Table

A small space or just down sizing,  a lovely small dining table for 4 people is ideal as a 90cm x 90cm, 120cm x 90cm or if you’re going round, then the 90cm diameter. Just be careful on the width of the table if you are going small, as people often think it’s not necessary to have the 91cm width. In fact this is really important because it enables you to tuck a chair under nicely and also any narrower than 90cm, the the people at the ends start to feel a little congested with the people down the sides.

One example of a 4-seater dining table is the French Farmhouse Dining Table from Farmhouse.co.uk. This rustic oak dining table can be made 90cm or 120cm long and is a perfect fit for a family of four.
